Study raises major questions on biofuels
A new study by The Nature Conservancy and the University of Minnesota finds that converting land for biofuel crops results in major carbon emissions, worsening the problem of climate change instead of mitigating it.
The National Petrochemical & Refiners Association (NPRA) hailed the study. "We've consistently called attention to the unintended consequences of building up a mandatory reliance on biofuels," said Charles T. Drevna, president of NPRA. (Full Story)

EIA: monthly average gasoline price to peak near $3.40 this spring
Retail prices for petroleum products are expected to be higher in 2008 than last year, due to higher average crude oil prices, according to the Feb. 12 Short-Term Energy Outlook, issued by the Energy Information Administration (EIA).
Both motor gasoline and diesel prices are projected to average more than $3 per gallon in 2008, according to the EIA report. The monthly average gasoline price is projected to peak near $3.40 per gallon this spring. (Full Story)

In New Jersey: lawmakers weigh toll hikes, gas tax
A Democratic senator proposed raising New Jersey's gas tax to eliminate some of Gov. Jon S. Corzine's planned toll increases, but predicted Corzine will find support for toll hikes after it becomes apparent that simply using budget cuts to control state finances would be too severe, the Associated Press reported. Wesco, operator of more than 50 stores, selects KSS fuels pricing suite
KSS, Florham Park, N.J., a supplier of pricing analytics, execution, and optimization systems to the petroleum industry, announced Feb. 13 that Wesco, a self-distributed operator of over 50 convenience stores, has selected the KSS suite of fuels pricing products, incorporating PriceNet, PriceNet Mobile, and KSS Visualizer, for a company-wide implementation. EIA: retail gasoline price drops 1.8 cents
The U.S. average retail price for regular gasoline slipped 1.8 cents lower to 296.0 cents per gallon as of Feb. 11, according to "This Week in Petroleum," published by the Energy Information Administration (EIA). This was the lowest price since late October of 2007 and was 71.9 cents higher than the price a year ago, according to the weekly. (Full Story)

The federal Energy Department has agreed to monitor oil refinery outages, a move Sen. Byron Dorgan believes could help prevent simultaneous plant shutdowns leading to high fuel prices and tight supplies, according to a Feb. 7 article by James MacPherson for the Associated Press. (Full Story)

Researchers say biofuels are a greenhouse threat
Almost all biofuels used today cause more greenhouse gas emissions than conventional fuels if the full emissions costs of producing these "green" fuels are taken into account, concluded two studies published Feb. 7, according to an article by Elisabeth Rosenthal in The New York Times. (Full Story)
