If you are an obsessed Windows user like me, then you must have noticed the significant improvements in its capabilities over the last twenty years. Windows 10 has made great strides, but with the passage of time, you may witness a slow down in its performance and hence, you may feel annoyed.

You probably already know this, but a host of variables can contribute to the lag in performance. For instance, there could be bugs, viruses, possible malware, hardware issues or compatibility problems.

The good news is that a lethargic personal computer doesn’t have to be tossed or thrown out the window- there are a few tricks and techniques to help boost its power and most of them are totally free of cost! Is that not the best news you have heard all day?

This article will explore different tips to increase overall performance of your personal computer. Please note that this is specific to Windows 10 only. Shall we get started? Let’s dive in!

Delete Unimportant Programs

Did you recently procure a new computer? If yes, then you must have seen the new pre-installed applications it comes with. Do you really need so many? We don’t think so! There are tools such as bloatware and other programs that you will not even be utilising. So why waste additional space and resources?

So, following are the steps you take to remove such software:

  1. Launch Settings
  2. Open Apps
  3. Choose Apps and Features
  4. Click on the App you wish to uninstall
  5. Click the Uninstall Button
  6. Note if you decide to remove a Microsoft Store program, you will have to click on the Uninstall button again to confirm your choice. However, if you’re deleting a conventional application from the desktop (win32), you can simply implement the instructions given to you on your computer screen.
  7. If you want to remove more programs, then just repeat steps d, e, and f.

Reboot your personal computer to ascertain that the application in question has been uninstalled and enjoy the positive difference in your computer’s performance.

Select Applications Smartly

One tip that we really want to share with you concerns the quality of the design of certain applications and programs. If done poorly, such applications will exert an adverse impact on the performance of your computer and really slow it down. Remember, even if you know the publishing developer of the program and is a big brand name, it is not a guarantee that the application in question is of high quality.

Consider Adobe Acrobat Reader, it is the first PDF reader that comes to peoples’ mind when thinking of such an app. However, there is a whole array of alternatives that readers could access but do not think of it. Those other programs have better performances and don’t invite you to add other unnecessary apps to your desktop.

To safeguard your PC’s performance, take a little time to do your homework and research which applications work best. Try to install only from the Microsoft Store.

Deactivate Start-up Programs

When you start your machine up, you must have noticed that a lot of programs suddenly launch themselves and start running in the background. The objective behind this is to let you reach specific programs faster. But if your device does not have strong operational power, then those apps will slow down its performance you may even find that windows freezes often. So what you need to do is to disable them and this is how:

  1. Double-click the task bar
  2. Choose Task Manager
  3. Select More details
  4. Open the Start-up button
  5. Choose the Status option to select those apps that are slowing down your computer
  6. Right-click and choose the option to Disable
  7. Repeat steps a-f to disable more programs

Update Your Drive

If you have an older model of a computer, then the greatest obstacle you’re going to face in performance is the hard drive. Such older versions consist of rotating platters that create a sluggish performance compared to other pieces of hardware.

Try to get your hands on an SSD              and it will become your computer’s best friend. These solid-state drives are built without moving components, hence your data will be read faster.

Automate Your Windows Updates

Always make sure that you automate your updates on your machine as it will optimise its performance. There may be times when you will have to check your updates manually. This is how you can do it:

  1. Launch Settings
  2. Open Update and Security
  3. Click on the Windows Update option
  4. Choose Check for Updates

Many developers will publish beta or stable versions of a device driver to increase performance through its website even before it is posted on the Microsoft Store. However, if your device’s performance slows down to a driver issue, you can fix this dilemma by upgrading your driver through manual means.

However, before you get started, do make sure to download the latest driver package from your computer’s producer. Then just follow this:

  1. Launch Start
  2. Open Device Manager
  3. Choose the driver you wish to update
  4. Right-click and choose Update Driver
  5. Open Browse my Computer for Driver Software
  6. Under the search box that will pop up, select the Browse button to choose the folder that contains the latest driver.
  7. Click Next
  8. Click Close

6. Restart Your Computer

This should be your last resort- if you assess nothing is improving the performance, then reset your computer to start again with a clean version of Windows 10. This will better your starting and closing down times along with its general performance.

How can you do this? Simple.

  1. Open the Settings area
  2. Choose Update and Security
  3. Start Recovery
  4. Under the Reset this Pc option, choose the Get started button
  5. Click Keep My Files and after that, Remove Everything is the option you go for.
  6. Do remember to review the programs you are deleting.
  7. Then click the reset option

Once this is done, you will have a fresh, clean version of Windows 10!
