Introducing NPN MarketFacts 2008
The Industry’s Number One Resource for Petroleum Marketing Since 1955
NPN Magazine introduces its 2008 edition of MarketFacts. Used by petroleum and retail marketers, the comprehensive publication provides historical and up-to-the-minute facts, figures and trends on U.S. and international petroleum and c-store markets.
NPN MarketFacts 2008 Highlights
The annual station count dropped by slightly over 2,500 from last year’s count bringing this year’s total to 161,768. This is in line with the continued but increased consolidation in the industry in the past year. Although current market pressures, such as the high price of gasoline and inflation, are negatively impacting industry profits and sales, so far the impact is not being felt notably on the ground. Anecdotal evidence suggests that the 2009 count may show more impact. The two major oil companies topping the branded retail outlets ranking remained unchanged for 2007. Shell stayed in the No. 1 spot with having 14,000 stations, a more than 600 station increase from last year. BP also increased its amount of stations to stay in second place, with 13,000 compared to its 12,300 count in 2006.
Total Gasoline Sales
ExxonMobil maintained its No. 1 position in total gasoline sales in the United States. The company reported that it sold over 24.5 billion gallons of gasoline, a relatively small growth in 2007 of .2 percent. ConocoPhillips also stayed in the No. 2 spot, with almost 19.1 billion gallons in sales, dropping 6.9 percent. BP once again followed ConocoPhillips in the rankings, with its sales of 16.1 billion gallons of gasoline; and Shell remained in the fourth spot, reporting 13 billion gallons.
Royal Dutch Shell continued to stay in the top spot of total amount of assets for 2007. The company also held on to its status in other categories, remaining in the No. 2 position for net income and No. 7 for gross revenue. For the other high-ranking companies, there was not much variation from last year. ExxonMobil kept its No. 2 rank for total assets, but came in No. 1 for both net income and gross revenue.
