Turning a national “day” into a promotion, a marketing opportunity or a fundraiser is an old trick – and often it works.
The Pantry, Inc., Cary, N.C., announced that it will be celebrating National Hot Dog Day on Monday, July 23, by offering a free hot dog to every customer at its 1,160 “grill-ready” Kangaroo Express convenience stores.
Between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. customers can pick up a free Ball Park hotdog, the chain said in a press release. (One per customer, while supplies last.) That's a savings of $1.39. Paired with a Roo Cup refill, customers can pick up “a dog and a drink” for just 25 cents, the retailer said.
Kangaroo Express customers also can support military service members by donating to the Salute Our Troops fundraising campaign, the retailer said.
"National Hot Dog Day is a holiday that all Americans can support, whether it's about their love for the hot dog itself or about the pride and patriotism that it represents," said John Fisher, senior vice president of marketing, merchandising and restaurant operations, Kangaroo Express. "What better way is there to celebrate than to show our customers - and our military - that we care about them? We invite you to come into Kangaroo Express to enjoy a free hot dog on us, and help support the troops who protect our freedoms."
Through Labor Day, Kangaroo Express is inviting customers to make donations to the Salute Our Troops campaign, directly supporting United Service Organizations (the USO), lifting the spirits of U.S. troops and their families; Wounded Warrior Project, to benefit injured service members; and six state-based military support organizations.
In its inaugural year, the 2011 Salute Our Troops campaign raised $2.5 million dollars, breaking fundraising records for many beneficiary organizations, including the largest grassroots fundraising initiative in the USO's 70-year history.
The USO is a nonprofit, congressionally chartered, private organization that relies on individuals, organizations and corporations to support its programs and services for those in the military, and their families.
