Shell Chemical LP (Houston) has announced a major capital investment at its Mobile, Ala. fuel supply terminal, which will reduce wait times for Motiva customers of Shell-branded and commercial fuels. This investment will also provide a more reliable fuel supply to the region during emergencies.
The $10 million investment will include adding a dedicated lane for Shell-branded customers and other improvements to significantly cut the wait times for all customers. The upgrades are expected to shorten fill time by approximately 50 percent for diesel and 20 percent for gasoline. In addition, the new loading lanes have been designed to be more ergonomically friendly.
During severe hurricanes, the Shell terminal in Mobile has at times been the sole source of fuel supplies for southern Alabama, Gulf Coast Mississippi and the Florida Panhandle. This investment will allow more trucks to load in the terminal faster and, as a result, stations can be restocked more quickly in the event of supply disruptions caused by weather or other issues.
Construction began this month and by November of this year the first loading lane is expected to be completed. The project completion date is set for June 2009. Construction should not affect the current wait and load times at the site, as the additional lane will be added first to ensure three lanes are always open until the project is finished.
